WATCH THIS
So, I just saw Whip It. And yes, it's another teen flick, and yes, it's got Ellen Page in it, and yes, she is playing an awkward but quirky misfit struggling with teenage angst and oppression. BUT, don't be fooled y'all, it's not Ellen Page that makes this movie....it's Drew Barrymore. In her directorial debut, Barrymore once again brings all her palls together to showcase a hilarious take on a coming of age story, that is truly heart-warming in ways that Michael Cera could only dream about.
Page plays Bliss, a Texan beauty queen fighting the future her mother wants for her, when she joins an all-female Roller Derby Team, and is reborn as 'Babe Ruthless', the star skater of the Hurl Scouts. So, the story's pretty predictable, climaxing in Bliss' tough decision between beauty pageants or Roller Derbys....you get the jist, but Barrymore as 'Smashley Simpson' and the other aptly named 'Maggie Mayhem' (Kristen Wiig) and 'Iron Maven' (Juliette Lewis) are really what makes this film impossible not to love. Whilst there are weak spots, namely the obligatory love interest followed by a dodgy 'kissing under water' scene, the tunes are good and the jokes are fun. Hit this up for sure. ***
