REALITY BITES

Source

I was wondering where Winona Ryder was. She stole some stuff and then appeared in Black Swan for a crazy little rant about her moment having passed but where between? Maybe she was being looked after by Whoopi Goldberg in a mental institute, in the 1960s. Wait.
So, I decided to fill in the gaps. I didn't really get very far when I discovered Reality Bites; a film she made in 1994, about a group of twentysomethings grappling with their sexuality, identity and future in an uncertain world. The film encapsulates an era, charting the career and lifestyle choices of Generation X. I watched. I liked. I think the film has more of an honesty to it than most other twentysomething movies of late. Is anyone else getting sick of the onslaught of 'witty' RomComs hitting our screens since 500 Days of Summer? I know I am. Maybe I'll boycott them all and only watch movies from the 20th century. YEH. Back to Reality Bites....the themes must still apply to the twentysomethings today, hell, I'm a twentysomething and I identified with all the characters. I like the offhandedness of it. I'm definitely going to start answering the phone with 'Hello, you have reached the winter of our discontent'. It's got the balance of purity and rebellion to a tee and my GOD, Winona Ryder looks cool.
